Underfloor heating works by pumping warm water through plastic pipe work embedded in the floor. Because the surface area of the floor is so much greater than that of a traditional wall mounted radiator, the water flowing through the system can be far cooler while still providing the same amount of heating to the room. This translates into financial and carbon savings and makes UFH ideal for use in combination with heat pumps, which provide heat at lower temperatures than oil, gas or biomass boilers. That said, UFH will still reduce your heating costs whatever your heat source. UFH can be used with a wide variety of floor coverings and because the heat rises from below, it makes the room ‘feel’ warmer.
Although modern high efficiency radiators are now available, they still suffer from a number of disadvantages compared to UFH. Not only can they be unsightly and provide patchy heat, leading to cold spots and drafts, their performance can be also be hindered by something as simple as the positioning of furniture.
